Teaching Statement:

Oftentimes as educators we are told to take apolitcal stances in our
pedagogical practices. I believe this is impossible. There is no such thing as teaching art devoid of politics. There is no such thing as education devoid of politics. I believe the camera is a tool for radical change and should be taught as such.

My teaching philosophy is about breaking down classism in the arts and humanities. This includes supporting/working for free education initiatives and incorporating zero cost principles inside the classroom. Film and Media Arts are often seen as a costly production. Many are told without funding and support there is no hope for being a filmmaker or making your cinematic masterpiece a reality. My teaching practices offer an alternative approach to production that is rooted in the aesthetics of experimental filmmaking and the avant-garde. That one can achieve aesthetic and conceptual excellence with some old film that was thrown away and some household products. This also includes practices such as mordancage, direct animation, found footage, collage, and hand processing.

Although my work is focused on film and motion images, I incorporate many other art practices in my teaching such as poetry, painting, performance, and sculpture. I believe the line between these practices are arbitrary. Borrowing techniques and grammar from other practices can elevate your’s.

My teaching practice also includes introducing a new canon of media arts that includes predominantly women, queers, and people of color into my syllabi. The history of media arts has often forgotten these artists and innovators. To include these artists is to create an inclusive environment where all people can envision themselves as makers.
